Our family name is Laschinger and my grandparents were living at 102 Gilmour Street in 1911 in Ottawa (Central ward,district 18, page 11). Their name has been transcribed as Lasehinge. The names should be as follows at lines 25 through 28: Edmund H. Laschinger (head), Annie L. Laschinger (wife), James E. Laschinger,(son) and Charles H. Laschinger (son). They also had a domestic listed with them at line 29. Fraser Laschinger |

Ref.: 1911 / Ontario / Ottawa / 18 Central ward / page 11 F. Laschinger, Lines 25-28 - The surname has been corrected to "Laschinge" which is what I read the enumerator wrote. Line 27 - The given name has been corrected to "James E.". Line 28 - The given name has been corrected to "Charles". The name of the domestic on line 29 is definitively not "Laschinger Fraser". Hello Alain, I appreciate that your policy is to transcribe what the enumerator wrote. When I looked at the handwritten name, the r at the end of Laschinger is obscured because it went out side the column into the next column. It is unfortunate that the policy would result in an incorrect name in your records. My grandfather E. H. Laschinger was the Assistant Deputy Postmaster General of Canada and you can find numerous references to him in the archives of Canada library. One example is correspondence he wrote to Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier which can be referenced in archival reference no. MG26-G volume 384 Page 102315 Microfilm reel C-827. The item is part of Political Papers. General Correspondence [textual record] (R10811-2-3-E) October 19, 1905. The last of these files is dated 1911, the last year Edmund Laschinger worked at the Post Office Department. That file has a finding aid no. MSS0091. Thank you for correcting the names of James and Charles. I didn't mean to imply that the domestic was named Fraser Laschinger. That was my name at the end of the message. I just pointed out that the Laschingers had a domestic living with them. It would have been a young woman. My grandmother favoured Irish girls as her family was of Irish descent and they had numerous domestics through the years to take care of their children. Hi Fraser, Following your explanation, I relooked at the census entry and at a 200% zoom and see the extra letter sideways, so I recorrrected the surname to Laschinger. Thanks, |
